On reading through the module I realized the roleplaying
aspects of D&D were not emphasized nearly as much as such
things in later modules. In particular the NPCs had no
character or even names, they were such things as Castellan,
Sergeant, Provisionner, etc. What you are currently reading
is my versions of the characters. I tend to come up with
personalaties during play and then write them down for
later reference. These are those writeups. They will be
expanded as we play through the module.
When we started the game the PCs arrived to find the aftermath
of a battle. There were several Orcs dead beside the road, they
will later discover many more dead Orcs that were tossed over
the keep into a crevise. Six guards lay dead inside and everyone
was a bit suspicious. The suspicion was offset by the fact that
everyone in the party was so young.
- General attitudes: The soldiers generally have the attitude that the Castellan, although
not a god, is the next thing to it and the Sergeant of the Guard is
her direct disciple. Saying anything bad about either can land you
in hot water very rapidly. The Sergeant can be one of the soldiers,
but whenever he speaks ex cathedra his word is taken as if it had
been said by the Castellan. "The Old Lady wouldn't like that..."
- 9. Provisioner Guinalis the Provisioner is a
thin man of 30 years who makes most of his money selling
provisions to the keep. He has a rather annoying habit of
invading your space when he talks to you, commonly bargaining
from within 1 foot and touching purchasers shoulders or holding
an arm (roleplay it). He is scrupulously honest. He will
start bargaining for things that must be transported in (food,
decent weapons, etc) at twice the price listed in the PHB and
will never go lower than 50% over base. For things found
(orcish weapons, things from merchants useless to him) he will
usually start at 20% under listed price and drop to a minimum
of 50% of list. Don't figure it, just estimate on the fly.
He has no compunction about suggesting things. "I know you
are a mage, but a little armour would help keep you alive. It's
just leather. I'd hate to see the next band of raiders carrying
your head on a stick."
- 15. Taverner Talian the Taverner is short (5'4") fat and
balding. He will not serve anyone he thinks is a mage anything stronger
than watered
wine, he is very apologetic about this but he had a cousin who lost a
roof to a drunken mage. He is also adamant about no mages casting
spells in his tavern, however, he has a weakness, he loves minor
illusions and would love to see an illusionary tiny dragon fly around
his store. He will also give free meals to mages who can do big
impressive things, outside.
- 18. Sergeant of the Guard The Sergeant is not the only
sergeant in the keep, he just happens to be the senior enlisted. Where
the CO (Commanding Officer) is the father to all the military personel,
The Sergeant is mother. He makes sure everyone is where they are
supposed to be doing what they are supposed to be doing. If a soldier
has problems they can't solve on their own the sergeant is where they
take them. Not to say the sergeant isn't stern, he takes it as a
personal failure if anyone has to go in front of the "Old Lady", but
at least he is approachable. He also seems to have a knack for
knowing when someone is not doing what needs to be done.
- 27. Castellan Merbirien, Despite her
45 years the Castellan is an attractive black haired women of about
5'10" and 150 pounds. There are a few gray hairs starting to show.
She tends to think adventurers, especially young ones, should either
join the military or go back to civilization and do something safer.
She has had several young groups go through and more often than not
disappear forever. She is kept rather busy with the business of
the keep but will almost always take time out to have a talk with,
and size up, any group out to make their fortunes and a name for
themselves. Since she knows most of what is going on in the
surrounding area she may direct a party to what she thinks is a
relatively low risk mission. She will not hesitate to send
several men-at-arms to ensure small or weak parties survive in
her area of command. (IE, a weak party may have some NPC help).
She will also not hesitate to send a detachment to clean out
any areas of significant resistance discovered by the PCs. Note
that PCs do not get experience or treasure for this, the soldiers
keep 50% of loot to themselves the rest is split among the
officers. If the PCs are significantly involved they will be cut
in for part of the enlisted mens 50%.
